About me

I am passionate about learning. I believe most learning takes place through dialogue and communication with others. Clear communication begins with strong literacy skills. I seek to help K-12 students develop critical literacy skills and a love of reading, preservice teachers develop strong visions for teaching reading, and inservice teachers foster and grow their existing pedagogical skills. Further, I aim to support teachers, parents, schools, and communities that provide reading, writing, listening, and speaking instruction.

Background

I started my teaching career in Kansas City, Missouri, as a classroom teacher (2nd and 3rd grades) and as a reading specialist (5th and 6th grades). In 2011, I founded Pages & Chapters, a nonprofit empowering teachers to engage families in literacy. I have consulted for after-school literacy programs for foundations and nonprofits, supporting lesson plan development, goal-setting, and professional learning communities implementation. I hold a BS in interdisciplinary studies and early childhood education and an MA in holistic education from Johnson University, an MA in reading education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a PhD in literacy, language, and social inquiry from the University of Maryland. I am certified in the state of Missouri for early childhood education (PreK-3) and reading education (K-12). In September 2015 I was honored by the International Literacy Association as one of their inaugural class of 30 Under 30 honorees in the field of literacy.
